Arteta Praises ‘More Reliable’ Squad and Acknowledges Havertz Setback.
Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his side can persist in handling with fitness issues after confirming that attacker Kai Havertz remains out for several more weeks.
Prolonged Recovery for Havertz
The German forward has been absent for months following knee surgery. Originally slated to be available at the start of this month, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when stepping up his training and failed to reach “the required stage.”
“We learned, and we were able to put together a squad that is much more reliable and has increased versatility,” Arteta said.
Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture
This news presents a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. Arteta must choose between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who found the net as a makeshift striker on Sunday, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return from a muscle injury as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also in contention following a lengthy absence.
Fitness Doubts Linger
More doubts surround defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Stamford Bridge game. As a result, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably continue in central defence for the Premier League front-runners.
Arteta believes the significant outlay on reinforcements during the summer has left Arsenal in a far better place to deal with such absences.
Squad Depth Vital for Title Challenge
When asked if increased squad depth was aiding their title quest, his response was positive. “Indeed, as this campaign has been worse in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he noted.
“We learned from the past that we need to utilize players in different positions, and they must be capable to perform various functions if we are to fight at the highest level. And the case of Mikel is just the best one.”
Arteta's Support for Frustrated Havertz
Commenting on the complication highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the required step and now the signs are like we have solved that issue.”
He shared his eagerness to see him return. “Everyone is eager to have him. I mean, Havertz is someone that, personally, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his personality. I see him suffer on the sidelines.”
“His playing record is outstanding, he’s been always available, and I can’t wait to get him back around the team playing because I believe it’s going to be a massive boost.”
