British Government Pulls Substantial Financing for Mozambican LNG Initiative Following Environmental and Terrorism Concerns
The UK government has pulled a disputed $1.15 bn loan for a massive LNG development in Mozambique, citing growing concerns that the initiative contributes to the climate emergency and militant attacks in the area.

Business Secretary the Business Secretary declared that the UK would withdraw its backing for the gas venture, coming five years after the deal provoked bitter criticism from campaigners over its effects on human rights, safety, and the planet.
“While these choices are never straightforward, the government holds the view that UK support of this scheme will not further the interests of our nation,” stated Kyle.
The move was revealed as the scheme's developer, France-based oil major TotalEnergies, plans to restart the troubled initiative, which has been paused since a deadly militant attack on a local town in 2021 resulted in hundreds of casualties.
History and Growing Risks
The loan guarantee was first agreed in 2020. Authorities said they had reviewed the potential problems associated with the venture and found they had escalated markedly since that point.
At first, the UK's export credit agency had claimed the scheme would support thousands of UK jobs and could be “transformational for Mozambique's economic and societal development.”
However, green groups have consistently contended that the African nation should be supported to channel resources more aggressively in renewable energy to build a sustainable green economy.
Criticism and Appeals for Wider Action
The project served as a focal point for insurgency in the region and was also accused of violating the rights of local communities who were relocated when construction work commenced.
“It has been blatantly clear for years that this scheme is a failure for local communities and for the environment,” said one activist from a sustainable finance organisation. The campaigner called on leading international banks funding the venture to end their involvement, arguing they “can no longer turn a blind eye the concerns.”
Another prominent environmental advocate remarked: “This Mozambique gas project is a enormous climate liability, connected to significant violations. It should never have been given UK public support in the first place.”
The campaigner further urged that the UK should instead assist nations like Mozambique by aiding them to adapt to the effects of the climate change and invest in their rich clean energy potential.
