Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

Global audiences grieves the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and actor whose distinctive voice was instrumental in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. He passed away at the age of eighty-one.

“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on social media. “I am grateful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his motivation during his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff gained fame for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic musical style and uplifting temperament brought him a vast and loyal fanbase.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s crime drama The Harder They Come, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is considered a landmark of Jamaican cinema.

He was among the select few of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
