NY Unveils Portal for Citizens to Share Immigration Videos Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens
New York state AG has introduced a recent online portal encouraging citizens to submit visual evidence of ICE operations across the state. This move follows a day after a significant immigration operation shook Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering widespread protests.
American Citizens Arrested During Enforcement Action
A lawmaker revealed during a midweek briefing that four US citizens were arrested and kept for "nearly 24 hours" following the previous day's operation. Rallies broke out in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Each citizen has the right to live without fear," the AG declared in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and captured federal operations recently, I ask you to share that evidence with us. We are committed to examining these accounts and investigating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The platform includes options to submit images and video footage of the incident, plus a section to note geographic details. When submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that acknowledges that "authorities may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a court case or government document."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say featured over fifty federal agents, occurred in a popular area of Manhattan where imitation products and merchandise are commonly traded en masse – typically to tourists.
Recordings of Tuesday's raid depict numerous covered and weaponized personnel zip-tying and detaining a man, and shoving away bystanders. Crowds of residents trailed the officers along the roads. An armored military vehicle was noticed moving along the city streets.
Leadership Statements
During a news conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a lawmaker, announced that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be arrested for without cause." He clarified the individuals were released on Wednesday with no legal action taken.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he remarked. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is simply a justification to generate turmoil for the government to deploy the armed forces to prevent violence that they have created."
Broad Criticism
Outrage over the federal action escalated – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the incident, as did NY's governor.
"Yet again, the Trump administration chooses heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, not safety. It must stop," a contender wrote.
NYC advocacy organizations spoke out also.
"ICE targeted Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, masked agents and protective equipment to focus on street vendors trying to make a living. This raid had no relation to public safety and focused completely on frightening communities and communities," remarked the head of a rights organization.
Official Guidelines
Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the organization has stated it will not take into custody US citizens. However, independent reporting has discovered that over 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by ICE since the beginning of the present government.
Recent Pattern
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in New York and around the country recently.
A recent action in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the present government. Demonstrations opposing ICE are ubiquitous as are claims of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a document provided by legal entities stated medical neglect of expectant mothers in government custody.
