The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series reaching its finale—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Audience Reaction
One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the writers are not listening by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
