Just prior to his name was called, a trepidatious thought raced through the golfer's mind. He revealed he was hoping, "Please don't let it be a racing champion again."

"This has been a great night for golf," he stated. "Our game was recognized in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and hopefully we can use that."

In this instance, however, there was no late twist. The verdict was clear, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to enjoy a memorable evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were crowned the top squad.

A Whirlwind Schedule

Instead of opting to celebrate at the aftershow party, McIlroy was already plotting his immediate plans. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to Florida.

"I've had a whirlwind 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "I am anticipating a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Drive to Improve

That said, McIlroy stated he has no intention to rest on his laurels, even after completing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a few good years in me," he asserted.

"Further big titles, season-long rankings, Ryder Cups, that's the target. But as long as you feel like you can keep getting better and have the drive, that's the essential part."

Collective Honor

Meanwhile, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the team award, also praised golf's exceptional night and his pal's individual success.

"Those are the times that will remain with us forever so to get the public's recognition for that is really cool," he commented. "Witnessing it Rory receive that award, I think he is so worthy so much."

Upon hearing that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood grinned before joking, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Future Goals

He is aiming to finally win his maiden major next year but he recognized McIlroy still craves more success. "If you want to be the best you can be, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to work on," the 34-year-old said.

United Hopes

As he was leaving, one final question arose. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be tempted to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"If they halt the flow of four goals at home," he answered with a smile. "Improvements are being made. There's a little bit of hope around."

On the back of a 2025 for the ages, it's little surprise that Rory McIlroy is seeing the bright side.
