The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
