New research suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
