What We Know Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Shooting
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.
The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
